A little bright goes a long way, so limit the full-throttle shades to accents and put it in neutral everywhere else. Even neon (yes, neon) looks smart when used sparingly. In daughter Lia's attic bedroom, a highlighter-yellow pillow and rug feel vibrant and hip without overwhelming the space, thanks to the more muted teals and pinks.

What Does Color Say About You?

What color are you usually drawn to? What does that say about you? Find out what this selection of Benjamin Moore paint colors say about your personality.

"I've used this color so much that the paint chip is all bent and splattered with marks, like a cookbook. When I was five years old, I made my mother paint my room this color — a pale sky blue with a little gray in it. It's strong and fragile at the same time, and that's what most people don't realize about me. As aggressive as I am, I'm really soft inside." -Phoebe Howard

"Choose two hues that are closely related for an 'analogous' scheme," says Zimmer. Pick one (usually the lighter of the two) for the base color and apply two coats. Then measure the wall's height in inches and divide by 5. The resulting number will be the width of your stripes. (If you end up with an awkward fraction, add a little extra to the top and bottom bands to round off the number.)

Men and women are entirely different creatures, and nothing shows this more than the differences in interior design. If you have a situation where both man and woman are arguing about a remodel, check out this advice piece before continuing. You will find some paint and design ideas that will make both people happy.

Men typically want wood or leather in brown tones, says designer Christopher Grubb, owner of Beverly Hills-based Arch-Interiors Design Group. Try compromising with gender-neutral colors for the walls, like blues, greens, and oranges. Or focus bright spots of color on accent pillows, a throw, or other accessories.

Although often seen as a softer, more pastel shade of pink, coral is actually a pretty vocal and vibrant color. This sea-inspired hue stands out with both darker and more subdued colors, like pale yellow, seafoam green and gray. In this traditional bedroom, designer Tobi Fairley mixes this peachy shade with both emerald green and stark white for an especially eye-catching effect. She uses coral around the room through punchy accessories, like the pillows, throw and desk chair. The white-and-coral ceiling stripes really pull the entire look together.
