DIY Outdoor Holiday Decorations

Are you ready for the holidays? Make the outside of your home match the merriness of the inside with the following do-it-yourself decorations.

It tends to cost quite a bit of green to add premade fresh greenery to your front door this time of year. That is, unless you can make do with materials from Mother Nature. Make your own magnolia wreath by wrapping bunches of magnolia leaves and berry branches with florist's wire and twisting them around a wire wreath form. The "Joy" banner is another DIY project. Make it by gluing berries inside hollow acorn hats. Next, push the pointy ends of the hats into florist's foam cut into letter shapes. Finish by gluing the foam letters to a length of ribbon and tie onto your wreath.

Bathroom Remodels

Your bathroom walls are probably neglected, because it is often the last room to be remodeled. Make your bathroom a space that you enjoy with the following gallery.

Filling a blank wall with open shelving maximizes storage and function while keeping the space feeling light. Make your space even more functional by adding baskets or other found objects you may have throughout your home.

Unusual Color Combinations

Orange and blue may seem an unlikely color combination, but it can actually make a room come together. Sometimes the strangest paint combinations result in the most beautiful design.

When designing a room, a jolting shade of tangerine and various shades of blue may not be the first color combination that comes to mind. However, the two pair very well together when used correctly (and won't make you feel like you're cheering for a sports team). In this room, think of the subdued and grayed shades of blue as neutrals.

"I love the look of high-end materials like marble and polished brass, but if you can't afford, say, an all-marble kitchen countertop, why not bring those materials into your space by using them on smaller pieces and home accessories? I have a table lamp with a marble base that adds a very posh touch to my home office." -Camille Styles, lifestyle blogger & Creative Director at CamilleStyles.com

Kid's Rooms That Don't Age

Kid-friendly rooms are great for a time, until the child grows out of that style. Wouldn't it be nice if the kid's room worked for a long time, regardless of age?

You and your child will be happiest with a room that functions for both of you. Determine the room'sfunctionality by clarifying what activities will take place there. That will dictate whether your kids' room colors need to restful and playful, conducive to sleep and studying, or inspiring and fun.

Neutrals Can Work Many Ways

The coolest thing about neutral paint is the endless possibility for decorating. Neutral shades can also have a calming or brightening effect, so the paint can be multi-functional.

Calming Colors For Your Walls

Neutral colors can make interior design much easier, given that some lighter shades can open up a room. The following paint gallery will provide inspiration for shades that will also bring calm feelings.

" This is one of those hard-to-pin-down colors, conjuring up woodland streams and wet clay and summer shadows and greenback trout. Actually, it's the color of most of my fishing gear. It's wonderful on old wicker or cabin floors. It would make a beautiful dining room with dark wood furniture and blue-and-white Canton ware."
